SPOILER by Eireann The relationship falls to pieces on a trip to California. Annie meets a record producer and Alvy complains about everything, leading her to break up with him on the plane home. Alvy revisits the places (and jokes) he shared with Annie with new dates, but it isn't the same. Alvy goes to California to convince her to return with him to New York, and proposes to her, but she declines, happy in her new life. She drives off, and Alvy (reliving the bumper cars of his youth) bashes into three cars trying to get out of the parking lot. After being released from jail, we see Alvy directing two actors through his new play, which sounds suspiciously like the conversation Annie and he had at the cafe, but with a happy ending instead. Alvy mentions he later ran into Annie back in New York - she was dragging some guy in to see the Sorrow and the Pity. We see a montage of their relationship as Alvy reminisces about how much fun he had with her.
