Salieri succeeds in working Mozart to death, by preying on his fear of the masked figure he believes is the ghost of his dead father. However, Stanzi arrives home at the last moment, finds the unfinished Requiem, and locks it away while Salieri protests; his grand plan eradicated. Mozart is given a pauper's burial outside the city gates, with his family and a small crowd of admirers watching the hearse take the coffin away. Salieri ends his conversation with the confessor at daylight, and is wheeled away through the insane asylum as Mozart's music and high-pitched laughter floods his ears.
